10 Questions to Ask Any Study-Abroad Consultant Before You Pay

A good consultant can save you time, money and stress. A bad one can cost you a year. Before you pay anyone — including us — ask these ten questions.

  1. Do you charge me, and exactly how much? Ask for the fees in writing, with GST.
  2. Do you earn a commission from universities? Most consultants do. An honest one will tell you which universities are partners.
  3. Will you recommend non-partner universities if they suit me better?
  4. Who will handle my file? Will the same counsellor stay with you from start to visa?
  5. Do you guarantee admission or a visa? Nobody can. Universities and governments decide. Walk away from any guarantee.
  6. Will I pay tuition directly to the university? You should. Never pay tuition into a consultant’s account.
  7. Will you write my SOP? The right answer is no — they should guide and review, not write it.
  8. Can you show me the full cost of the course? Tuition, rent, food, travel, visa and insurance, not just tuition.
  9. What is your refund policy? Get it in writing before you pay.
  10. Are you a registered company? Ask for company and GST details on the invoice.

How we answer them

Counselling and partner-university applications are free. Paid services have fixed fees, shown in our free fee catalog. Tuition is always paid directly to the university, and we never guarantee outcomes. Read our refund policy.
