The UK remains one of the most popular choices for Indian students, mainly because most taught Masters degrees take just one year. Here is how the process works, step by step.
1. Shortlist the right universities
Look beyond rankings. Compare course modules, city living costs, entry requirements and whether the university accepts your degree classification and English score. A balanced shortlist has ambitious, matching and safe options.
2. Apply and receive offers
Most postgraduate applications go directly to the university online. You will receive either a conditional offer (you still need to meet some conditions, such as final results or English score) or an unconditional offer.
3. Pay the deposit and get your CAS
After accepting an offer and paying any required deposit, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). You need it for your Student visa application.
4. Show maintenance funds
UK visa rules require you to show money for tuition still owed plus living costs, held for a set period before you apply. The amounts differ for London and outside London and are updated from time to time, so always check the latest figures on the official UK government website (gov.uk).
5. Apply for the Student visa
You apply online, pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge, and give biometrics at a visa centre. Apply as early as the rules allow.
6. After your degree
The UK has a post-study work route for eligible graduates. Its length and conditions have been under review, so check the current rules on gov.uk when you plan.
Common mistakes
- Applying only to big-name universities in London
- Moving funds into the account too late for the required holding period
- Underestimating rent and the cost of the first month
