Choosing an English test is not about which one is “easiest”. It is about which test is accepted by your shortlisted universities and for your visa, and which format lets you show your real ability.

Step 1: Check acceptance first

Before booking any test, check the entry requirements page of each university on your shortlist and the official visa guidance for your country. Some universities accept all major tests; others accept only some. Visa rules can be stricter than university rules.

The main options

  • IELTS Academic: very widely accepted across the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and Europe. Speaking is a face-to-face interview.
  • PTE Academic: fully computer-based, including speaking. Results usually arrive quickly. Widely accepted, especially in Australia and the UK.
  • TOEFL iBT: computer-based and popular with US universities; accepted by many others.
  • Duolingo English Test: taken online from home and accepted by a growing number of universities, but less often for visas. Confirm before you rely on it.

Step 2: Match the format to how you perform

If you are comfortable speaking to a person, IELTS may suit you. If you type quickly and prefer a computer, PTE or TOEFL may suit you better. Try a free official practice test of each before deciding.

Step 3: Plan your score, not just your test

Universities often ask for a minimum overall score and a minimum in each section. Aim slightly above the minimum, and book your test early enough to retake it once if needed.
